A complete guide to healing after cesarean birth.
Recovering from a cesarean section is different from vaginal birth recovery. You have undergone major abdominal surgery while also caring for a newborn. Give yourself permission to rest.
In the hospital: you will stay 2-4 days. Pain medication, help with mobility, and monitoring of your incision are standard. You will be encouraged to walk gently to prevent blood clots.
At home: limit stair climbing, avoid lifting anything heavier than your baby, and do not drive for 2-6 weeks. Sleep on your side with pillows for support. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not rub against your incision.
Incision care: keep the area clean and dry. Watch for signs of infection — redness, swelling, warmth, discharge, or fever above 100.4°F.
Full recovery takes 6-8 weeks, but complete healing of internal tissues can take months. Be patient.
