Why your hair starts shedding around 3-4 months and how to care for it.

Around two to four months after giving birth, many moms notice clumps of hair in the shower or on their brush. It can be alarming, but postpartum hair shedding is a normal, temporary phase — and it is not permanent hair loss.

During pregnancy, higher estrogen levels keep hair in its growing phase longer, so most women lose very little hair. After birth, estrogen drops back to normal, and the hair that was "saved" begins to shed all at once. This is called telogen effluvium.

What to expect: shedding usually peaks around 3-4 months postpartum and can last until about 6 months. You may also notice a receding hairline or thinner temples — this is normal. New growth typically starts around 4-6 months, so many moms see a return to a normal thickness by their baby's first birthday.

What helps: keep eating protein-rich foods, stay hydrated, and gently care for your hair — avoid tight hairstyles, high heat, and harsh chemical treatments. A soft hairbrush and wide-tooth comb are easier on shedding strands. Check with your provider before starting any supplement; iron or vitamin deficiencies can worsen shedding if present.

When to see your provider: if shedding continues beyond 6-9 months, you develop visible bald patches, or hair loss comes with other symptoms like fatigue or a flaky scalp, mention it at your checkup. Most of the time, though, this phase passes on its own.
