Gentle routines that protect shedding hair and support regrowth.
When postpartum shedding begins, the best thing you can do is treat your hair gently. Here is a simple routine that protects the hair you have while new growth comes in.
Wash with a gentle shampoo every 2-3 days — or as often as your hair needs. Shedding happens whether you wash frequently or not, so do not skip washing to "save" hair; the strands that fall were already released. Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair instead of brushing.
Skip tight styles. High ponytails, tight braids, and heavy clips put stress on the roots. Loose buns, soft scrunchies, and air-drying are easier on your hair. Avoid heat tools when you can, and go lower temperature when you cannot.
Focus on nutrition: protein supports hair growth, and iron, zinc, and vitamin D matter too. If you suspect a deficiency, ask your provider to test before supplementing. Most prenatal vitamins already cover the basics.
Look after your scalp. A gentle scalp massage a few times a week can feel soothing and support healthy circulation. If you see itchy, flaky patches or a reddened scalp, mention it to your provider — it may be a treatable scalp condition rather than typical shedding.
Be patient with yourself. Regrowth takes months, and the little "baby hairs" around your hairline are a good sign. This phase is temporary, and your hair will settle into a new normal.
