Breastfeeding burns approximately 300-500 extra calories per day. Your body needs additional nutrients to produce quality milk and maintain your own health.

Caloric needs: most breastfeeding mothers need 1800-2200 calories per day. Do not drop below 1500-1800 calories without medical supervision.

Key foods: oats (may help milk supply), leafy greens, healthy fats (avocado, olive oil), protein-rich foods, and complex carbohydrates for sustained energy.

Some babies are sensitive to certain foods (dairy, soy, eggs). If your baby shows signs of discomfort, try eliminating common allergens for 2-3 weeks under guidance.

Keep taking your prenatal vitamin while breastfeeding. Continue taking vitamin D and omega-3 supplements as recommended.
